But, I am wondering, how does these acronyms, abbreviations related to laughter come out at the very first place?
LOL was first used in a teleconference room when a person really laughed out loud, that was when LOL was first used. So the person started using it since. However, this does not became popular until that particular person started using it in one of those big online services GEnie, with those chatrooms and all. People around the world started copying him and soon it became a online sensation, with people mutating it, resulting with other terms like ROFL, LMAO, LOLOL and so on. Soon this became more and more ridiculous as more and more people creates longer and longer, weirder and weirder abbreviations, exaggerating it. And then here we have it LSHIPABITFBIDKWTDWM, TYVM!
Amazingly, LOL was amongst the first few such words that was invented. If you realized, LOL came almost before all other similar internet lingo. Besides these LOL-stuffs, smiles was also part of the earlier trends. =) Knowing these lingos could save ample text character spaces (if you SMS, you'll know) they started appearing in text messages, emails, short messages. More and more of them sprung out. 2G2BT?
Twitter even made use of this! But IMHO, Twitter had only added fuel to this trend.
Besides Twitter, I believe even more chatrooms, might have contributed more, ROFLcopter was invented in Blizzard. Mainly as a keyword to slow down a game, in order to gain advantage when losing, and there might even be a lot more we don't know. But one thing I do know is, a lot of this were use as a emphasis. OMGWTFBBQ was one example. The "BBQ" bears no meaning. It is only used as a emphasis of the shocking-ness of the OMGWTF. The gentler version includes OMGWTFJELLYBEANS, and some said it was for vegetarians.
Another example is OMGWTFPOLARBEAR, use to emphasize the senseless context of the subject. This was originated in a recap of the earlier episodes of Lost, where a vicious polar bear was found in a jungle. It was so out of place that it was referred as OMGWTFPOLARBEAR.
Isn't it amazing how internet can change the way we wrote? Or how the way we even see things? It had even allow us to decipher even the weirdest of messages.
